What is your favorite biography?
“Master Robert Bruce” by D.C. Macnicol published by @banneroftruth is the story of a Scottish minister in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century wrestling with issues of persecution of the church and an unjust and immoral king. If you are interested in history or biography, it is an accessible and interesting read about the highs and lows of a faithful and fiery minister of the gospel. Master Robert Bruce was as intimate with the Lord as he was intellectually and the way that he obeyed his conscience in the face of opposition is a characteristic that each of us can learn from!
Christian biographies take the theology and values that we learn from the other nonfiction genres, and show how they are lived out in the midst of often challenging life circumstances. Pastor John Piper points out that In Scripture, Hebrews 11 (commonly dubbed the “Hall of Faith” is an example of biographies of people of faith used to encourage and inspire the reader to lay aside every weight and run with endurance the race set before each of us. As I read the tales of Bruce preaching the gospel in disparate places, from the Little Kirk in Edinburgh to the rough Scottish Highlands, I was inspired to pursue faithfulness and courage in the midst of challenges that I face in my ministry. Hearing the tales of faithful men and women that have walked before us can provide the endurance that it takes to persevere through discouragements in ministry.
One of the most effective lies Satan tells us is that we are the only ones to experience pain and that we are walking this path alone, and reading biography reminds us that we are not blainzg the paths we walk, we are following in the footsteps of faith in a line of people that stretches all the way back to Abel in Genesis 4.
I would recommend this book to the Christian that loves church history and biographies, or wants to grow in their love for history and biographies!
