Books on Prayer

“Of the publishing of books on prayer there is no end.” Here are some of the books on prayer that I have enjoyed reading and gotten a lot out of. Prayer isn’t easy, so peruse this list and choose a book that will help you to grow in this important discipline!

A Praying Life - Paul Miller

If you want to make any Christian feel uncomfortable, ask them how they're doing in the areas of generosity, evangelism, and prayer. In "A Praying Life", Paul Miller tackles that discomfort head on and identifies its source as cynicism that naturally comes along with life experience. This was the first book I read as a Christian and it is the first book that I would recommend on a list like this.

The Valley of Vision

Prayer is more caught than taught. This collection of Puritan Prayers gathered and titled helps me to put words to the feelings of brokenness and hopelessness that I am tempted to feel under the sun. Each prayer reminds me of the holiness and goodness of God in the face of the valley that many of us are in right now. I highly commend you to make this part of your rhythm of prayer! Either the leather bound or the genuine leather edition is to be preferred over the paperback.

Praying the Bible - Donald S. Whitney

Donald Whitney, professor of biblical spirituality at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, theorizes that most Christians do not find prayer to be boring because they are defective second-rate Christians. Instead, it’s because we tend to pray “the same old things about the same old things.” Praying the Bible will help your prayers be diverse in language and informed by Scripture. I think every Christian would benefit from reading this book.

When Prayer is a Struggle - Kevin P. Halloran

This is a straightforward and practical book on prayer. Using the head-heart-hands paradigm, this book will help you with the hands of prayer. As you work through the different obstacles that stand between you and a thriving prayer life, you’ll find yourself taking next steps and beginning to develop a healthy rhythm of prayer. It’s short and a quick read!
