Understanding the Gentle & Lowly One - The Heart of Christ by Thomas Goodwin Book Review

The Heart of Christ will remind you of the gentle heart of our Lord Jesus.

Jesus is in heaven, looking down on you personally, and he loves you now more than ever. Do you struggle with believing that?

Thomas Goodwin’s “The Heart of Christ in Heaven Toward Sinners on Earth” was written to assure you that if you trust in Christ, if you are a Christian, then not only does Jesus in heaven love you, He loves you now more than ever. This is the most recent entry into @banneroftruth‘s Puritan Paperback series that I’ve read, and like the rest that I have reflected on so far, I can highly commend it.

Goodwin composes beautiful sentences that address the concerns that we might have about the love of Christ for us, and comes to the conclusion that even after dying for our sins and bearing the wrath of God for us, Christ’s love for us is greater right now than it ever has been. The English language is the canvas on which Goodwin paints a picture of Christ’s tremendous love, and the picture he paints is a gorgeous one. Like a fine painting, this book must be considered carefully in order to receive the maximum benefit from it.

This book in particular is not for the faint of heart, reading it was tremendously fruitful for me and was an exercise in focus and in reading comprehension. If you are wrestling with the reality of Christ’s love for you, I think this is a great book to read, but if you are just looking for an entry point into the world of the Puritans, I would point you to Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices by Thomas Brooks, or even The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Jeremiah Burroughs as a slightly less complex introduction to Puritan literature.

I recommend this book that wants to deeply explore the reality of Christ in heaven’s love for us!
