Letters from the heart to the tongue - The Scuttlebutt Letters

When it comes to the way we live, the Bible has more to say about the way we use our words than almost anything else. Natalie Brand’s new book The Scuttlebutt Letters will provoke you to think more carefully about the relationship between our words and our hearts, while making you laugh in the process. You can swipe to read some of my favorite quotes / highlighted verses from the book.

Here are some things you should know about The Scuttlebutt Letters

  1. This is a great book to read if you have read and enjoyed The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Brand makes no attempt to hide her inspiration, and I think this book does Lewis justice. By scrolling my feed you might realize I don’t read a ton of fiction, but when I heard about the format of this book, it intrigued me.

  2. There are an abundance of footnotes to specific verses in the Bible and references to other Christian books. One of the distinctives of this book is the way that Brand helps you to get a sense of what the Bible is teaching about the relationship between our words and our hearts.

  3. This is an extremely short book. I would recommend reading one letter out loud each day to let the message sink in instead of blazing through it in a single afternoon, which you could very easily do.

  4. Despite almost being a work of satire, there is a redemption story and clear presentation of the gospel that make it a hopeful title for those of us who have hoped for a long time to see an improvement in the use of our words.

  5. Finally, this book does not take itself too seriously. There are many moments of humor that make it enjoyable along with thought-provoking.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that I had the privilege to endorse this book for Natlie Brand and Christian Focus. You can read my official endorsement in the post, this is the kind of book that is good for Christians of all ages and all levels of maturity. I am grateful to have partnered with them in this way.
