Friends of WTSreads
Below is a list of books from authors that I personally enjoy following along with. Add one of these books from a friend of mine to your TBR list! You might find a hidden gem that not too many people know about.
Fix Your Eyes - Amy Gannett
Amy Gannett has written book about the doctrine of God that is accessible and engaging. She connects who God is to why we should worship Him. In reading this book, I was reminded that everyone is a theologian, so we should strive to be good ones! Gannett is the founder of Tiny Theologians, a shop devoted to teaching theology to young children.
The Relentless Fight - Andy Cimbala
A great introduction to fighting sin. This book is especially good to read with college students, younger Christians, or in any kind of discipleship relationship. Focused on the gospel without removing our responsibility to pursue holiness. Andy works with a college ministry called Disciplemakers.
Behold - Justin Huffman
Justin Huffman has written a book that is needed in our age of short attention spans. He helped me to understand how the authors of Scripture intended for us to respond when we see the word “behold,” and to take a minute and rethink the significance of the events recorded in Scripture.
Table for Two - David and Krista Dunham
This is a very personal retelling of David and Krista’s experience with an eating disorder, from the perspective of the sufferer (Krista) and a loved one struggling to understand (David). Whether you’re aware of it or not, you probably know someone who feels trapped in the bondage of an eating disorder, and reading this book may equip you to be a helper.
Blogging for God’s Glory - Benjamin Vrbicek
I consider myself to be an amateur “wannabe blogger.” One chapter that I especially appreciated was the chapter on success in blogging. Benjamin Vrbicek wisely cautions the reader against expecting to earn any kind of financial return in blogging, or even to gain a large audience. If you are considering buying a $49.99 eBook or $299 course on how to earn five figures (or even three figures) in your first year of blogging, please buy this book instead and remember that success in blogging for God’s glory is not defined by the size of your audience, but to live out the awe-inspiring truths so many of us get to write about.
Diehard Sins - Rush Witt
Diehard Sins is devoted to helping us battle the kind of sin patterns that affect us daily and won’t seem to go away on their own. I was grateful that he treats small, “respectable” sins like an emergency. If you’re wanting to kill a bad habit, this is one of the top books I’d recommend.
Don’t Just Send a Resume - Benjamin Vrbicek
Finding a full-time job in ministry is not easy. I read this book when I was in seminary thinking about my future in ministry, and this book encouraged me to start preparing early for my inevitable job hunt. Vrbicek is autobiographical and gives practical steps for anyone wanting to find a ministry job. Especially if you’re looking for your first job in a local church, I’d recommend reading this book.
Finding Hope in Hard Things - Pierce Taylor Hibbs
What I appreciate most about Hibbs’ writing is that although he is highly theologically trained, he communicates rich truths through autobiographical stories and vivid illustrations. This is a good book for sufferers or to put in the hands of someone who is suffering.
Gospel Smugness - Blake Long
Blake Long lays out the case for letting the gospel be the main offense in evangelism. He takes a holistic view of witnessing and recognizes the benefits of guarding our mouths and speaking respectfully. We need truth and love, and Long’s book helps us to evangelize with both.
See-Through Marriage - Ryan and Selena Frederick
It would be hard for me to overstate how much I’ve learned about marriage from Ryan and Selena Frederick. I’ve listened to hundreds of episodes of their podcast, Fierce Marriage, and of course have read See-Through Marriage. In marriage, we can be fully known and fully loved, even when it requires serious vulnerability. I’d recommend this book for any married person. Bonus points if you read it with your spouse.
Talking About Race - Isaac Adams
What I appreciate most about Isaac Adams is his ability to avoid foolish controversy. He writes this book with a pastoral heart. I hope reading this book will help you to lower the temperature and raise the amount of prayer that exists in your conversations about race.
The Whole Life - Eliza Huie and Esther Smith
This is the first book that I ever had the privilege of endorsing! Eliza and Esther are biblical counselors who provide wisdom on stewarding your entire life to maximize God’s glory and a holistic view of health.
When Prayer is a Struggle - Kevin P. Halloran
This is a straightforward and practical book on prayer. Using the head-heart-hands paradigm, this book will help you with the hands of prayer. As you work through the different obstacles that stand between you and a thriving prayer life, you’ll find yourself taking next steps and beginning to develop a healthy rhythm of prayer. It’s short and a quick read!
