Living in Light of the Gospel - Worthy by Sinclair Ferguson

Worthy by Sinclair Ferguson is a short book that will inspire you to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. In many ways, this book reminded me of Jerry Bridges’ writing - a strong emphasis on personal holiness that flows out of God’s grace in Christ. While this definitely falls into the category of “Christian Living,” Ferguson brings a theologian’s perspective and he made a lot of great points that you might not have heard before!

Here are some of my takeaways from this title:

  1. As grace-loving Christians, we can be tempted to pull the plug on the commands in Scripture. As grace-loving Christians, we can embrace those commands and live with obedience as a response to the good news about what Christ has already done for us.

  2. Followers of Jesus have a new identity - sons and daughters of God, and so we have a new way of living. Our lifestyles ought to strike our neighbors as a little peculiar, attractively different.

  3. Ferguson does a great job explaining the relationship between the “indicative” and the “imperative” moods in Scripture. The indicatives (what God has done) are the foundation for the imperatives (how we ought to live)

  4. I loved Ferguson’s point about sitting under the preaching of God’s Word. Even as we listen, week in and week out to the Word being preached, God is using that act of preaching and listening to more and more conform us into the image of Jesus. Preaching is not merely an information transfer about a particular passage of Scripture, it is a means of grace for us to lay hold of.

  5. Finally, I appreciated his thoughts on humility. In walking in humility, we imitate Jesus, who lived a humble life. Others worth imitating are first imitating our humble Lord
